Innovation story

Maximum efficiency, minimal footprint

Subcontractors in construction are used to tough work conditions, but also face tough financial and environmental requirements. No wonder Brødrene Myhre, one of Norway’s leading drilling companies, decided to shift to this electric and highly efficient compressor from Atlas Copco.

About 30 minutes from the Norwegian capital of Oslo, the Langenga area in Asker has been transformed into a new, green and child-friendly suburb. One of the subcontractors who made it happen is Brødrene Myhre, a family-owned company and one of Norway’s largest suppliers of drill air applications.

With a great interest in technology, the company’s CEO Håkon Myhre immediately paid attention when he heard about the variable speed drive (VSD) functionality of Atlas Copco’s E-Air V1100 compressor.

“We want to be part of the green transition, and believe that the future is electric, also in construction,” says Håkon Myhre, CEO of Brødrene Myhre. “Shifting to an electric compressor means lower operation costs as well as less environment footprint – a true win-win. It also opens new opportunities in all type of construction projects, and helps us meet the strictest environmental regulations.”

Håkon Myhre, CEO of Brødrene Myhre, with a colleague Norway’s largest suppliers of drill air applications, Brødrene Myhre, is counting on the variable speed drive (VSD) functionality of Atlas Copco’s E-Air V1100 compressor. Compressed air is needed to drive the drilling rig and to remove the materials that are displaced when drilling into the ground. When Brødrene Myhre was assigned the Langenga real estate project, Håkon immediately realized that Atlas Copco’s largest E-Air compressor, the V1100, was the perfect match. It is highly efficient and powerful enough when drilling in solid bedrock. It was also the best candidate in terms of maximum air flow, minimal noise, and close to zero emissions.

“The compressors we need are very energy intensive, but thanks to E-Air’s VSD functionality, it offers no idling time at all compared to a diesel compressor. We get a lot of air for our money, and minimal CO2 emissions,” says Håkon Myhre.

“The E-Air series contributes to lower emissions since the variable speed drive adapts the energy consumption to the actual need at any given second. This also means significantly lower energy costs, especially compared to diesel-powered machines,” says Jon-Andreas Ellefsen, Sales Manager for Atlas Copco Power Technique in Norway. “Our vision is to deliver electric and mobile compressors for all possible customer applications. We want to enable to transformation to a low-carbon society.”
